A friend of mine recently forwarded a message that he got from his Google Webmaster Tools. He is a small business owner who has an out of date website and he asked what he could do about it.
My friend put his website up quite a few years ago and even though he rarely updates it, thanks in part to the age of his site, to some powerful backlinks, and he ranks ok on google anyway. I let him know that Google recently announced that they they are updating their search algorithms to adapt to the high use of mobile devices.
Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.”
This is significant because normally google is rather secretive about changes to their search result. They are trying to warn businesses, especially small businesses that they have to do something to keep their sites relavent. Some people call this is Mobilegeddon. I’m calling it the the Mobipocalypse. Since the change is coming April 21st. His site is going to take a hit, and he’s only got a bit of time to get his act together about it.
